六月有奖征文:The Magic Between Me And My Teachers

作者:曹译方 | 来源:苏州枫华学校

Most Chinese people have stereotypes for foreigners such as blonde hair, blue eyes and pale skin. However, to me, foreigners are much more than these. My BC teachers have black, blond and brown hair, some of them even have their head shaved. Their eyes are mostly grey and brown and rarely blue. Also, their skin color can vary as well since I met teachers with pale skin as well as teachers with dark skin. Foreigners to me are much more than just appearance, their personalities, their hobbies and their experiences…All of these parts produce the magic between my BC teachers and me.

I once had Mr. Shand’s English10 class and he is the most special teacher I have ever met. My first impression of him could be described using only one word---scary. I had heard tons of rumors that said Eng10 was one of the hardest subjects in my school and among all the teachers who taught Eng10, Mr. Shand was the most strict one. The first time I saw him, I could only remember his red eyes and skinny hands. Mr. Shand was not like my other teachers who were tall and strong since he was not very tall and was thin.
The first day I went to his class, I was so afraid of looking at him that I kept staring at my computer screen or my notebook. Mr. Shand seemed to know that my classmates and I were nervous and he told us not to be nervous while he was handing out a Reading Test. The only thought I had at that time was: Seriously! The first day of my wonderful high school life! A Test! I could not stop myself from trembling and I could tell that my desk mate had the same feeling. As Mr. Shand handed out the test papers, he added: ‘You only have twenty minutes to do this test and….it starts now!’ I was totally shocked, there were a total of six pages of the test and each page was packed with unknown words. ‘To finish this in twenty minutes?Impossible!I am only a first-day Grade10 student…’ was my only thought about this and although I did not want to, I still tried my best to finish this test. When Mr. Shand called time was up, I only finish reading the first two passages and I did only ten questions. I knew I must had failed this test and felt
so upset.
The result of the test was soon released and I only got two out of twenty.Although I saw that the class average was even lower than my grade, I was still pretty sad. Mr. Shand explained that he knew this was hard for us and he said that he would teach my classmates and me the methods to do this kind of test. Then, he showed my classmates and me how to do this kind of test. For example, we needed to read the questions first, we could skip the unknown words first and guess their meaning and it was just a waste of time to read each passage word by word. It was a mind-blowing lesson and I found that after properly applying his methods to the practice reading tests, I got remarkable progresses.
Two weeks later I got my second Reading Test and I found that this one was much easier than the first one. Although I had just enough time to finish all the questions, I got eighteen out of twenty. I knew that Mr. Shand’s methods were really great and also, these methods helped me a lot during my IELTS test recently.
Gradually, I found that Mr. Shand was not so scary as the rumors said and he was even cute in some ways. My classmates and I called him “elf ” when we got quite familiar with him. Now, Mr. Shand had already left my school and went back to Canada, all my classmates and I pretty miss him and the good memories we had with him will never be forgotten.
Mr. Shand was the teacher who gave me a lot of help with my academic performance while there was another teacher called Mr. Wilson who made me fell in love with sports. At first, Mr. Wilson was my Comm11 teacher and he was so humorous and active that almost all students at my school like him. I felt I was so lucky to be one of his students and I really enjoyed each Comm11 class.
However, after I finished Comm11 and started my Grade11 life, I found that I did not have Mr. Wilson’s class any more. I felt a little bit disappointed about the
schedule and accidently, I heard that Mr. Wilson had an Outdoor Club with other teachers. I got so excited that I signed up for the Outdoor Club as soon as the Club Fair starts. There were already a lot of people lining up in the line, waiting to sign their names on the Sign-Up sheet. Mr. Wilson told the students and me that we needed to write our applications first and hand them in with our resumes. Then, the students Mr. Wilson and other teachers selected needed to go through interviews and the teachers would finally choose eight students from grade11 and another eight students from grade12.
I was a little bit worried if I would get chosen and after two weeks of meetings and interviews, I am told that I was in! I could not describe how I felt at the moment I saw my name on the Outdoor Club Members List except fantastic. The first trip Mr. Wilson planned for all the club members was a snowboarding trip to ChangBaiShan. I was nervous at first since I did not how to snowboard at all and I had never tried it before. However, my friend, who was also a member of the Outdoor Club, told me that she did not know how, either and we could learn together. I felt relieved when I heard this and when Mr. Wilson told me that most students in this club did not know how to snowboard and the goal of this trip was to teach us and make us feel happy.
On the day I arrived at ChangBaiShan I was too excited to fall asleep and I got up early in the next day’s morning. Mr. Wilson took all of us out at about eight o’clock and we had professional coaches to teach us during the first day. I learnt some basic skills the first day but I also got hurt for a lot of times. Every time I felt down, Mr. Wilson would encourage me to stand up again and keep trying. He also said that he wanted me to feel happy when I snowboard instead of feeling painful and I tried to always face the obstacles with a positive attitude. On the second day of snowboarding, the coaches finished their basic lesson and naturally, Mr. Wilson and three other teachers became our coaches. They taught me how to snowboard on heels and toes, how to slow down, the tricks to get up easily when falling down, and how to turn. Although I felt down so many times that I even thought of giving up, Mr. Wilson would help me stand up and try again.
By the last day of the snowboarding trip, I could switch between snowboard on heels and toes easily and I felt so proud of myself. Mr. Wilson showed me that I could be good at sports as well as long as I kept practicing and never giving up. Although I felt so tired when I came back to my school that day since all my muscles felt sour, I became much more passionate about sports.
Both Mr. Shand and Mr. Wilson helped me a lot and I feel so fortunate to meet them and become their students, even friends. I also meet a lot of other wonderful BC teachers who are patient to me, always encourage me and help me solve problems such as my Eng11 teacher, Mr. T and my Social11 teacher, Ms. Mcguire. However, all the words are too plain to describe how wonderful they are and I just feel so lucky to have a chance to meet all of them during my life. I will never use the word “foreigner” to describe them since to me, they are not “foreign” at all. They are familiar to me and they are like friends, teammates, cheerleaders and even families.
